Your First Appointment
Once you have made an appointment to see a lawyer, you may be deciding
what to bring with you. If you will be discussing estate planning, you
should think in advance of all the things you own (property, bank accounts,
pension plans, insurance policies, annuities, etc.) and how they are currently
titled, and their current value. You should also think about the people
you would trust to take care of your affairs if you get sick, or after
you are gone. And you should be sure to know the spelling of all names
of people who are important to you, and their addresses and birthdays.
If you are meeting with a lawyer to discuss business matters, be certain
to bring all relevant documents. And if you intend to ask about different
corporate entities for your business, you should consider bringing tax
returns for the past few years.
If you are meeting with a lawyer to discuss an insurance problem, be certain
to bring the policy, claims information, and all correspondence.
Mr.
Rubin suggests viewing at least one of the Estate Planning Videos (click
the Estate Planning Videos link from our links menu) prior to any first
meeting on the subject of wills, living wills, trusts, powers of attorney,
or estate planning. Mr. Rubin strongly recommends all three videos, and
the Life and Death video most of all. |
